
The term “digital oilfield” has been used, at least since 2001, by of all corporations, Microsoft. It describes a wide variety of activities, and its definitions have encompassed an equally wide variety of tools, tasks, and disciplines. All of them attempt to describe various uses of advanced software and data analysis techniques to improve the profitability of oil & gas production operations. Frequently recurring digital oilfield themes include an unfortunate number of computerize buzzwords:
- Internet of Things
- Cybersecurity
- Collaboration
- Decision support
- Data integration
- Drilling/asset automation, and unfortunately…
- Blockchain!
Why do you care?
Software and automation is going to be a much bigger part of your job and the systems on which you work. OEMs don’t have the time or inclination to train you on what’s really happening under the hood of that new control system, BOP or autonomous DP. You have to dig in and find the material for yourself.
